Insurance and Fees

Insurance Participation

Inkwell Neuropsychology currently participates with the following insurance plans:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island

  • Aetna

Additional insurance panels may be added as credentialing processes are completed.

Coverage for neuropsychological testing varies depending on the specific insurance plan and the reason for the evaluation. Many insurance plans consider neuropsychological testing a covered service when it is determined to be medically necessary and supported by an appropriate referral. Some plans require prior authorization before testing can be scheduled.

When insurance is used, coverage decisions are determined by the insurance company. Individuals are encouraged to verify their benefits directly with their insurance carrier prior to scheduling an evaluation, including information about deductibles, copayments, coinsurance, and any out-of-pocket responsibilities.

Private Pay Evaluations

Neuropsychological evaluations may also be provided on a private pay basis in situations where insurance cannot be used. This may occur if the practice is not a participating provider with a particular insurance plan or if the requested services are not covered under an individual’s insurance benefits.

When services are provided on a private pay basis, the individual is responsible for the cost of the evaluation. If requested, documentation may be provided that individuals can submit to their insurance carrier to inquire about possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Private pay evaluations follow the same comprehensive evaluation process and include the same level of detailed assessment and individualized recommendations as evaluations provided through insurance.

Private Pay Fees

Comprehensive Neuropsychological Evaluation — $3,000

A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation assesses multiple areas of cognitive and emotional functioning. The specific measures included in the evaluation are selected based on the referral question and information gathered during the clinical interview.

Areas assessed may include:

  • attention and concentration

  • executive functioning (planning, organization, cognitive flexibility)

  • memory

  • processing speed

  • language abilities

  • visual–spatial reasoning

  • problem-solving and abstract reasoning

  • emotional and psychological functioning

  • behavioral and adaptive functioning when relevant

Comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations are commonly used to assess concerns related to:

  • ADHD

  • executive functioning challenges

  • diagnostic clarification

  • cognitive and emotional functioning

The evaluation process typically includes:

  • clinical intake interview

  • standardized questionnaires

  • administration of a tailored testing battery

  • scoring and interpretation of results

  • a comprehensive written report

  • a feedback session to review findings and recommendations

Extended Evaluations — $3,600

Some evaluations require additional testing in order to fully address the referral question. This may involve longer testing sessions or a broader assessment battery.

Examples may include:

  • autism spectrum evaluations

  • detailed academic achievement testing

  • complex diagnostic clarification involving multiple contributing factors

When substantially additional testing is required, the extended evaluation fee applies. Final recommendations regarding the scope of the evaluation are determined after the clinical intake interview.

Educational Testing — $600

Academic testing evaluates skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics and may be requested to better understand learning difficulties or possible learning disabilities.

These types of assessments are often considered educational services, and many insurance plans do not cover them. Individuals are encouraged to contact their insurance provider directly to determine whether academic testing is covered under their specific plan.

Public schools evaluate students for suspected learning disabilities at no cost to families through the special education evaluation process. Families who have concerns about learning or academic progress may wish to consider requesting an evaluation through their child’s school district.

For individuals who prefer to pursue academic testing privately or who wish to obtain an independent evaluation, academic testing is available on a private pay basis.

A private academic evaluation may help clarify a student’s learning profile and provide recommendations to support educational planning. However, it is important to note that a private evaluation does not guarantee eligibility for school-based services or accommodations. Schools determine eligibility according to their own criteria and may require additional documentation or evaluations as part of their decision-making process.

Understanding the Value of a Comprehensive Evaluation

Ink Well Neuropsychology provides comprehensive, individualized evaluations rather than brief screening assessments. Each evaluation is designed to answer specific referral questions and provide meaningful recommendations that can guide educational planning, treatment decisions, and long-term support.

The practice focuses on a limited number of evaluations each week in order to maintain the quality and depth of the assessment process. A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation involves many hours of clinical work, including detailed history gathering, individualized test selection, administration and scoring of standardized measures, careful interpretation of results, and preparation of a comprehensive written report.

The goal of the evaluation is not only to answer diagnostic questions but also to provide a deeper understanding of how a person thinks, learns, and adapts. Many individuals and families find that this understanding helps guide educational planning, treatment decisions, and long-term strategies for success at school, work, and in everyday life.

Neuropsychological evaluation reports are often used for many years to support educational planning, accommodations, and treatment decisions.

Payment Plans

Payment plans may be available for private pay evaluations and can be discussed during the scheduling process. The goal is to make comprehensive neuropsychological evaluations accessible while maintaining the time and care required for a thorough and individualized assessment.

Superbills and Out-of-Network Reimbursement

For individuals who choose private pay and have out-of-network benefits, a superbill can be provided.

A superbill is a detailed receipt that includes:

  • diagnostic codes

  • procedure codes

  • provider information

  • dates of service

  • fees paid

This document can be submitted to your insurance company to request possible reimbursement under out-of-network benefits. Reimbursement policies vary across insurance plans, and payment from the insurance company cannot be guaranteed.

Service Area

Ink Well Neuropsychology currently provides services to individuals who reside in Rhode Island.

Licensing to serve Massachusetts residents is currently in process. Additional insurance panels may also be added as credentialing processes are finalized.
